Bent Shovel Brewing

Flight of Bent Shovel Beer

Sometimes you feel like leaving the city behind, in favor of exploring the country-side, in search of a fresh, lesser known Oregon craft beer. That was us last Saturday, so we decided to check out Bent Shovel Brewing, on the outskirts of Oregon City.

It’s a nice drive, not too far out but far enough to leave the city behind. The drive there is filled with winding roads, and scenic countryside near the Clackamas River, where this brewery is making some delicious 5 barrel and 10 barrel batches.

Bent Shovel Brewing in Oregon City, OR

The tasting room is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-6, but they'll be expanding their hours until 8:00 pm this summer.

Bent Shovel isn't currently bottling or canning their brew, but they can be found on draft around town at various tap houses, restaurants and growler filling stations.-Green Dragon, and The Civic Taproom & Bottle Shop are two that come to mind.

On my visit I got to try out their new Sonova Beach IPA described as “old and assertive aromas of pine, citrus and a touch of dankness meet clean American malt in this limited release.” With a respectable 7.5% ABV it had me hook, line and sinker.

Bent Shovel Tap List

Red Ceramic Growler with a flight of Beer

Bent Shovel brewing has 8 house-made beers on tap, with a guest cider offering. Owner and brewmaster Rick Strauss was pouring beers and happily answering questions in the packed tap house.

The inside seating area is small, but there's plenty of standing room and nice picnic tables outside, for those less rainy days when you can sip and enjoy the country-side.

I started out with a flight sampler and each beer was really delicious. My favorite was the Sonova Beach IPA, I decided to get a pint and a growler fill to take home.

If you find yourself in the Portland area, take a mini road trip out to Bent Shovel! A few notes for your visit below.

Prices

Pints are $5,

64 oz growler fills are $15

32oz growler fills are $8
